The Charleston Bombers, who have handed the Kentucky Coyotes their lone NABL defeat this season, host the Lexington lads this Saturday at the Recreation Gym in South Charleston. Game time is 7pm.
The Bombers (1-3) have played all of their NABL games on the road to date, and are looking forward to meeting their new rivals in their friendly West Virginia confines. They have split with Kentucky (6-1) so far, winning their first meeting in overtime before losing last week in a rematch.
"Playing on the road is always tough, " said Bombers coach Dave Spurlock, who is in his 24th year with his team. "Not many leagues play FIBA rules like we do and often you get some unique interpretations of those rules on the road."
The Bombers are again an exciting fast break team, led by swift point guard Ajamu Gaines. Gaines is joined by fellow youngsters Dan Hicks and Melvin Meyers to form a solid young nucleus. Veterans Greg Dennis, Wayne Casey, and Dwayne Price add seasoning to the team.
Four of the next five Bomber games are home, giving Spurlock a chance to climb back into contention. A loss in Owensboro last week saw the Bombers drop to third in the NABL, with Owensboro climbing to second.
"We get to see the Owensboro Showboats, Kentucky again, and then the Frankfort Cattle Barons here in Charleston," Spurlock continued. "They're all competitive and fans will be real pleased with the quality of play in this league."
The NABL is a renewal of the legendary AAU based NABL/NIBL of the 1930's-70's that included the Phillips 66ers, Peoria Cats, Akron Wingfoots, and Marathon Oilers.
