CATTLE BARONS RETURN TO ACTION WEDNESDAY WITH GRUDGE REMATCH AGAINST KENTUCKY COYOTES

The Frankfort Cattle Barons have a grudge to settle with the Kentucky Coyotes this Wednesday night. The last time that the two teams played, the Barons had apparently won in thrilling fashion 73-72 when Terrence Newby drove down Broadway for a last second layup. But the referee with whom the Barons had been jousting with all evening made a controversial call that disallowed the basket and gave the game to the Coyotes 72-71. After the call bedlam broke loose and Cattle Baron players and fans took off after the referee, who fled the scene.

"We were leaving the court knowing we lost," said Kentucky coach Jerome Hoosier. "I couldn't believe it when the basket was called off. I've never seen that happen ever in basketball."

Frankfort coach Ron Abegglen shared those sentiments.

"It didn't look like a travel when it happened and it didn't look like a travel on the scouting tape," said Abegglen. "But I told our guys that if they continued sniping at the referees that it would cost them in the end. They learned a good lesson from it."

The Barons have another reason to try to avenge that bitter loss. A win would stop the Kentucky win streak of six games and would move them ahead of Charleston into third place.

"We really need to play well and win," continued Abegglen. "We've been able to get our shots but we haven't been able to make them. If we are going to finish strong for the tournament, we've got to start hitting shots."

The contest at the Kentucky Basketball Academy is a warmup for a weekend of basketball in Frankfort. The Owensboro Showboats come in Friday night to the Capitol Plaza Convention Center for a 7pm game hoping to even their record at 3-3. If the Barons win both the Kentucky and the Owensboro games, they climb into second place.

On Saturday night, the Barons host the Charleston Bombers at home in another critical NABL matchup.  Game time for both games is 7pm.

Young fans 12 and under will be admitted free to both games in Frankfort when accompanied by a paying adult. This is a new policy adopted by the NABL at their recent league meeting, when they also decided to play a 16 game regular season this year and turn their March dates into Tournament and All Star action, with each of the three Kentucky cities sponsoring one of the events.
